This is where the word post was derived 18 Prior to 1840, letters were delivered by courier, coach or horse rider. Cost was dependant on the pages and distance travelled, which the receiver had to pay. Letters were sealed using a colored wax with ring or handheld seal. 19 The Greeks employed athlete runners to deliver their letters. The Arabs used pigeons for their delivery process.
