Halsey Minor Carter's Grove

CARTER'S GROVE A Brief History of the Georgian Plantation on the North Shore of the James River Carter Burwell Moves In 1737 Carter Burwell, the grandson of Robert "King" Carter, inherits land on the James River from his grandfather and moves in. Carter's Grove Is Built 1750-1755 A Georgian-style manor is built on the land for Carter to live in. He only enjoys it for 6 months before he dies. However, before he dies, he stipulates that the estate must and always be called Carter's Grove. 1755-1834 The Burwell Legacy The Burwell Family would own the estate until 1838 before selling it. It would go through nine owners in the next 100 years Carter's Grove Becomes Modernized 1928-1969 Archibald McCrea, a Pittsburch industrialist, purchased and modernized CG with the help of architect, W. Duncan Lee. The family would own Carter's Grove until the widow's death. It was then purchased and transferred to the CWF. Colonial Williamsburg 1969-2007 For nearly 40 years, Carter's Grove was part of the CWF. However, in 2007, it was sold to CNET founder, Halsey Minor, due to operating costs.
