But the number of escapes has plummeted at the same time. JOHN DILLINGER- Average # of Guards vs. Prisoners WHO HE WAS The famous gangster and bank robber of America's Depression Era, Dillinger escaped from jail twice. His first escape was in Ohio in 1933. His gang impersonated police officers who claimed they had come to extradite him and shot their way to freedom. HOW HE DIO IT Dillinger's second escape was in Indiana, where he used a wooden gun blackened with shoe polish to escape from a jail that local authorities had called "escape-proof". He took two men hostage, P. (P. rounded up all the rest of the guards, and locked them in his cell. Then Dillinger stole the sheriffs' new car and drove it to Chicago, where he was later gunned down outside a movie theater. 2 guards for every 11.2 prisoners A low ratio of guards to prisoners can encourage more escapes. But prisons have trouble attracting guards; pay can be less than $20,000 a year. Nationally, the turnover rate is over 25%. ABOUT ESCAPEES The Convictions Escapees Had Been Given The Time Left on Escapees' Sentences Most escapees have been convicted of either theft or violent crimes. Having little time left on a sentence has no bearing on who tries an escape. WHO THEY WERE WHO HE WAS Out of the fourteen escape attempts that were made in the history of the infamous island prison of Alcatraz, only theirs was a possible success. Starting at the age of 16, Abagnale began passing over $2.5 million worth of meticulously forged checks, and impersonated, among others, a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer. While in custody, Abagnale made an escape from an airliner taxiing down at New York's JFK HOW THEY OID IT In 1962, the three men burrowed through the concrete walls of the fortress, airport but was recaptured soon after. using only common implements such as spoons. Leaving behind dummies made of soap, toilet paper, and hair from the prison barber, they made a raft out of over 50 prison-issued raincoats they had stolen, and set sail into the San Francisco bay. Although the prison claimed that the men drowned in the bay that night, no bodies were recovered, and the U.S. HOW HE DIO IT In 1971, when he was sent to a jail in Georgia, Abagnale's escort forgot his detention commitment papers. A friend brought him fake business cards that convinced the prison authorities that he was an undercover inspector, and Abagnale was allowed to leave the prison. He was recaptured but soon released, on the condition that he help the FBI with its other fraud investigations. He is now the owner of a successful security consultancy. Marshal Service maintains an active case file on the trio. During a court recess, he was granted access to the courthouse's library, where he jumped from the second story and went fugitive for six days. After he was recaptured and returned to prison, Bundy acquired a hacksaw and cut a hole in his cell's ceiling, and after losing 35 pounds, he was able to fit into the crawl space above.
