What is Fibroid Embolization
Information provided by Fibroid Treatment Collective WHAT IS FIBROID AT A GLANCE Uterine Artery Embolization is a non-invasive, non-surgical, out-patient procedure. It is performed under local anesthetic with sedation and has a quick recovery time. EMBOLIZATION? Most patients are back at work in a few days. EVALUATION Before fibroid embolization, every patient is thoroughly evaluated to ensure the procedure is appropriate for them. This includes a review of medical history, general physical condition, and any other information pertinent to the case. EXAMINATION Next, the patient undergoes complete pelvic imaging, either ultrasound or MRI, to measure the size of the uterus and to look for any other conditions that might affect their health. PROCEDURE An incision the size of a freckle is made in your upper thigh. A tiny catheter is inserted through this incision and into the femoral artery. Using x-ray guidance, a trained physician locates the arteries which supply blood to each fibroid. Microscopic inert particles are injected into the vessels, blocking blood supply that nourishes the fibroid. Without a steady blood supply, the fibroids dwindle and shrink. POST-PROCEDURE 94% of all patients who had the procedure experienced immediate relief of excessive bleeding, pain and pressure. Six months after the procedure, 90% of all patients experienced significant fibroid shrinkage. 3 MONTHS 6 MO. 1 MONTH RECOVERY AND FERTILITY Most procedures take about half an hour and fibroids shrink immediately. After embolization, young patients who pursue fertility have a good success rate. Almost half of these women who came to the FTC conceived and delivered children, and this corresponds to other studies in the US, Canada and Europe. ſtc Freedom from fibroids, without surgery.
