What Are Urgent Care Centers?
What are Urgent Care Centers? Urgent care is faster and cheaper than an emergency room visit. Urgent care centers are intended to ease the burden on emergency rooms by treating non-life threatening injuries and illnesses; often the patient will be instructed to follow up with his or her primary care physician. Urgent care centers concentrate on the evaluation and treatment of acutely arising conditions, for a wide range of patients, but are increasingly providing lab services, xrays and routine physicals. In some states, urgent care centers have point-of-care prescription dispensing, to ensure that the patient can receive his or her prescriptions before leaving the center. Urgent care centers provide medical service for conditions that are not serious enough to warrant an emergency room visit, but which require rapid attention.
