Emerging research is linking bad moods and depression to overconsumption of fast food. Here's what you need to know and what you can do about it. STATISTICS: 50 million Americans eat fast food daily. There are more than 300,000 fast food restaurants in the United States. 44% of Americans eat fast food at least once a week. The most consumed vegetable in the U.S. is the French fry (also known as the potato). MENTAL HEALTH: DEPRESSION Foods low in omega-3 fatty acids, such as most fast foods, have been linked to anxiety. Lack of omega-3 fatty acids, combined with refined carbs, can lead to blood sugar flucuations that can cause confusion, fatigue and depression. Anxiety HYPERACTIVITY, Eating a diet high in artificial coloring and preservatives can lead to hyperactivity or a "sugar rush" - leaving people irritable and restless. OPTIONS: Opt for a veggie burger or a burger minus the bun.
