"NEGATIVE' SYMPTOMS • AUDITORY HALLUCINATIONS FLATTENED EMOTION • VISUAL HALLUCINATIONS MINIMAL EXPRESSION OF GUSTATORY HALLUCINATIONS EMOTION THROUGH BODY OLFACTORY HALLUCINATIONS LANGUAGE AND FACIAL KINESTHETIC HALLUCINATIONS EXPRESSIONS DELUSION ALOGIA, OR A LACK OF PARANOIA VOCALIZATION FEELINGS OF PERSECUTION • SHORT, CONCISE, DISORGANIZED SPEECH SIMPLISTIC WORDING PURPOSELESS BEHAVIOR •• DIFFICULTY INTELLECTUALIZING UNPREDICTABLE BEHAVIOR • AVOLITION, THE ABSENCE BIZARRE BEHAVIOR OF WILL-POWER DELAYED AND DECREASED •• DISINTEREST REACTION • LACK OF ENTHUSIASM DEPERSONALIZATION AND • MEMORY PROBLEMS DEREALIZATION • DIFFICULTY CONCENTRATING OR MAKING DECISIONS SCHIZOPHRENIA DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA These are the 3 specific criteria that must be present within a certain timeframe to qualify a schizophrenia diagnosis. 1. CHARACTERISTIC SYMPTOMS: 2 or more of these must be present for more than 6 months: I Delusions I Hallucinations I Disorganized speech (indicative of a thought disorder) I Extreme positive or negative behaviors (such as overly emotional or catatonic postures) I Negatives symptoms (such as a flattened affect, alogia, or avoliton, all being a lack of response) I If the delusions of the patient are deemed by the professional to be very bizarre, then only that one symptom is required. If the hallucinations feature one or more voices conversing and keeping a running commentary of dialogue, then only that one symptom is required. y of I Speech disorganization must significantly impair communication to count. 2. DYSFUNCTION IN SOCIAL LIFE OR OCCUPATION: Since the onset of symptoms, at least one major area of life, including hygiene, work, or socializing, must have been impaired significantly. 3. SIGNIFICANT DURATION: The disturbances associated directly with the symptoms must have persisted for at least six months, with one month of acute symptoms being present. If any of your friends or loved ones behaviors are changing and they're becoming more isolative, try to keep in touch with them regularly, and try help them if symptoms increase.
