Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, but stigma and bias shame us all. Bill Clinton Mental Health Awareness Week 12 - 18 May 2014 With 1 in 6 of us suffering from a mental health problem at any one time, you'd think we'd know all about it. but is that really the case? Having surveyed people from across the UK, benenden health have created an infographic to illustrate just how clued up we are about matters of the mind. Are you guilty of harbouring ignorance when it comes to mental health? Take a look and see how you compare to the rest of the UK... 52% 1 in 4 people suffer from mental illness in their lifetime, but 52% thought the number of sufferers would be higher. 61% People who realised that you can't cure anxiety by avoiding stressful situations. However, others didn't recognise these are symptoms of anxiety.. fear of illness and death RIP feeling observed feeling sick and dizzy 10% People who didn't realise that eating 84% disorders are a mental illness of those surveyed acknowledged that children and young people can also suffer from mental health issues. (10% of children aged 5 - 16 in Great Britain do). 64% were aware that women are more likely to be treated for mental health issues 51% based their decision on which gender they saw as most susceptible. 54% People who believe stress and anxiety is due to social pressures and responsibilities. 20-39 yrs 40-59 yrs 93% 11-19 yrs 60+ yrs 7% of people who took the survey believed under 60s would suffer most from stress and anxiety. In fact, women in their late 60s are most likely to be admitted into hospital for anxiety. 1 in 5 people view those with mental health issues as unstable, believing they are more likely to be violent or aggressive. In contrast, research suggests that only 5% of violent crimes are committed by people with severe mental illness" *The research states that severe mental illness includes bipolar disorder (manic depression) and other psychoses.
