THE LONG ROAD TO DIGITIZATION A HISTORY OF HEALTHCARE INFORMATICS Germany's Dr. Gustav Wagner establishes the German Society for Medical Documentation, Computer Science, and Statistics, the world's first professional organization for informatics. 1940 1949 His work paves the way for informatics to become an integral part of the healthcare industry in Europe and the rest of the world. Dr. Arthur E. Rappoport spoke about using 1952 ASCP the McBee manual punch card, the first computer used in clinical practice, at the American Society for Clinical Pathology. 1950 Ledley & Lusted publish their influential paper "Reasoning Foundations of Medical Diagnosis," which suggests computers should be integrated into the healthcare field to automate physician's work and reduce errors. 1959 1967 Utah's Latter Day Saints Hospital is Pappalardo, Marble, and Greenes develop MUMPS, a programming language which made it easier to create medical databases and integrate them into healthcare environments. one of the first in the United States to use 1960 an electronic medical record, the Health Evaluation through Logical Programming (HELP) software. It's the basis of many contemporary healthcare records software today. Release of computerized provider order entry system, Technicon Medical Information Management System. U.S. Government invests $1.02 billion into Science Applications International Corporation's Composite Health Care System for all local and OCONUS military health centers. Launch of the American Medical Informatics 1988 Association to educate healthcare professionals in informatics standards and systems. 1980 This system continues to be the foundation of the Department of Defense's electronic healthcare records. 1992 Launch of EpicCare, the first Windows-based electronic health records software. 1990 "By computerizing health records, we can avoid dangerous medical mistakes, reduce costs, and improve care," said President Bush at his state of the union address. He vowed to make electronic health records available to most Americans within the next decade.
