How Much Blood is Needed?

How Much Blood is Needed? The average blood donation takes about 500 ml (one liter) of blood. A car accident victim may need up to 40 liters of donated blood to survive. A heart transplant procedure typically requires up to 6 liters of donated blood. Most blood tests only require between 3 and 10 ml of blood. The NIH recommends to not draw more than 3 ml/kg from children in a single withdrawal. Blood sugar level tests only require 0.4 microliters of blood. Many research facilities do not allow more than 5% of total blood volume to be drawn within a one-month period. Tests for Hepatitis B and HIV are taken in "mini-pools" of 16 blood samples.
