HOARDING What is Hoarding? Compulsive hoarding or "Hoarding Disorder" is a recognised mental disorder featured in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition). It is defined as "a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them" Who Does It Affect? 6.3 million 1.28 million Research has shown that up to 2% of the population may be suffering from compulsive hoarding. That's an astounding 6.3 million people in the US and 1.28 million people in the UK. OCD Commonly considered to be a type of OCD, it is estimated that as many as 1 in 4 people with OCD also suffer from compulsive hoarding. It is usually present from the teenage years but gets worse after the age of 40. The average age of those seeking treatment for hoarding is about 50. Symptoms: Excessive attachment to possessions, including discomfort in letting others touch or borrow them or distress at the idea of letting an item go Shame or Persistent embarrassment inability to part with any possession, regardless of its value Difficulty managing daily activities because of procrastination and trouble with making decisions Limited or Acquiring no social interactions unneeded or seemingly useless items, such as trash or napkins from a restaurant Letting food or trash build up to unusually excessive, unsanitary levels Cluttered living spaces, making areas of the home unusable for the intended purpose, such as not being able to cook in the kitchen or use the bathroom to bathe Why do Hoarders Hoard? The items have They believe these items will be needed or have value They feel safer when surrounded by the things they save important emotional significance - serving as a reminder of happier times or representing beloved people or pets in the future What are the Effects? Severe clutter threatens the health and safety of those living in or near the home, potentially causing.
