NURSING HISTORY Explore the history and heritage of the nursing industry from the technological advancements to patient-centered care. The multi-faceted responsibilities facing nurses and the diverse skill sets now required are not lost on the education Loyola University New Orleans provides, dating back to the beginnings of modern-day nursing. START | 1850 Florence Nightingale 1853 During the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale pushed reform sanitation by cleaning every piece of equipment in the hospital. Susie King Taylor Susie King Taylor's memoirs are the only known circulated Civil War recollections of an African-American nurse. 20TH CENTURY The 20th century brings the expansion of nursing skills in expert fields. Specialized care becomes prominent and we see the emergence of several new areas for nursing professionals: ORTHOPEDIC, PEDIATRIC, CRITICAL CARE, TRAUMA, FLIGHT NURSING, NEONATAL, and PSYCHIATRIC |1930-1950s Licensure Laws Licensure laws started sprouting up to help protect RNs and LPNS from unlicensed practicing nurses.
