History of Bodybuilding bod-y-build-ing: enlarging the muscles of the body through exercise. The practice of strengthening and Known as the Father of Modern Bodybuilding, Eugen Sandow pioneered the sport with the first public displays of muscularity and strength. In 1911, Sandow was made special instructor in physical culture to the King of England 1910s Zishe Breitbart was a Polish circus performer and strongman. His feats included lifting baby elephants and breaking horseshoes in half. He died of blood poisoning at the age of 42 when he accidentally pierced his knee with a metal spike during one of his acts. 1920s The Original Loration of MUSCLE BEACH > From 1934-1959, Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, CA became known as one of the most prominent places for bodybuilding in the world. BANTA MONICA, CALPORNIA The AAU held the first Mr. America competition in 1939. 1930s Popular bodybuilder, Charles Atlas, marketed a fitness program for the "97 pound weakling." The NABBA held the first Mr. Universe competition in 1948. 1940s British bodybuilder, Reg Park, was Arnold Schwarzenegger's inspiration and mentor. He was the first bodybuilder on record to bench press 500 lbs. Steroid use became more widespread as competitors' focus shifted toward 1950s building muscle mass. The IFBB held the first Mr. Olympia competition in 1965. Austrian-American bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger, dominated bodybuilding in the 70s, winning the Mr. Olympia 1970s title seven times. Women's bodybuilding finally gained popularity in the 80s, with the first Women's Nationals and Ms. Olympia held in 1980. The first Arnold Classic, named 1980s after Arnold Schwarzenegger was held in 1989. Note the spike after 1995, when Human Growth Average BMI of Competive Bodybuilders 40 Hormone (HGH) began being used by bodybuilders to achieve greater mass. 30 1990s 1950 1970 1990 2010 Ronnie Coleman holds the record for most wins as an IFBB professional (26). In the early 2000s, the IFBB tried to make bodybuilding an Olympic sport, obtaining full IOC membership in 2000. Olympic recognition for bodybuilding remains 2000s controversial.
