Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder involve extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues. 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 678910 11 3 Major Types of Eating Disorders: 1. Anorexia Nervosa A condition in which an individual believes they're overweight when they're actually thin, which can lead to refusal to eat and compulsive exercise, possibly causing extreme weight loss and starvation. Dieting 2. Bulimia Nervosa A condition marked by a cycle of intensive dieting, uncontrolled episodes of overeating, and extreme measures to prevent weight gain (e.g., fasting or purging). Individuals with bulimia nervosa tend to maintain a normal weight. Overeating 3. Binge Eating Disorder Recurrent episodes of uncontrolled over-eating (without purging), often causing weight gain. Personality traits linked to various eating disorders include: • Feelings of helplessness Events that could trigger eating disorders in at-risk individuals are: • Low self-esteem • Getting teased about appearance Participation in sports that focus on maintaining a certain weight, • Dissatisfaction with personal appearance • Trauma • Perfectionism • Impulsivity Genetics could increase the risk for eating disorders.
