The Early Years of Drugs You know that heroin, meth, cocaine, PCP and MDMA are illegal. But do you know when they first appeared and what were they originally used for? It wasn't to get high. Heroin Heroin is a derivative of morphine. Morphine comes from opium, a natural substance in the seed of the opium poppy. Discovered | 1874 Original uses 1897: Bayer Pharmaceutical sold heroin to treat respiratory problems. It was also used in cough remedies. When did it become abused? Peaks of abuse: late 1940s-early 1950s and 1971-1977 When did it become illegal? 1924: The U.S. Heroin Act made it illegal to make or possess heroin. Methamphetamine Methamphetamine is a derivative of amphetamine. Meth is stronger and easier to make. Discovered | 1919 Original uses 1930s: Meth was used in inhalers to help asthmatics breathe more easily. 1939-1945 : Meth was used by Japanese soldiers in WWII to prevent sleepiness. When did it become abused? 1942: The drug became widely available, kickstarting meth abuse, especially by young people. 1980s-1990s: Use of ephedrine, including from cold medicine, made meth production easier and started a new wave of meth abuse. Use as a veterinary anesthetic continued, although waned. When did it become abused? 1960s-1970s: PCP became a recreational drug in the 1960s, with use peaking in the mid-1970s. When did it become illegal? Early 1970s: PCP was placed in schedule III (potential for abuse) of the Controlled Substances Act. Moved to schedule II (high potential for abuse) in 1978. MDMA MDMA, or 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, is a synthetic drug known as ecstasy or molly. Discovered | 1912 Original uses MDMA was ignored for decades after it was first synthesized. In the 1970s, some psychiatrists used MDMA for better communication in psychotherapy, éven though it wasn't approved for use in humans. When did it become abused? 1970: First report of recreational MDMA use. 1977: MDMA is available on the street. 1987: First report of death from MDMA use. When did it become illegal? 1985: Placed in schedule I (no accepted medical use) of the Controlled Substances Act. Removed in 1987 but returned in 1988.
