Mental -health organizations declined from a peak of 3583 in 1994 to 3131 in 2008. There were 1285 psychiatric beds per million in 1990; in 2008 there were 785. Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers organizations dedicated to mental health were at a high of 1577 in 1990; in 2008 there were 1292. Number of psych beds in general hospitals peaked in 1998 at 54,434 beds. In 2006, 80% of states had a shortage of psychiatric beds. Total Number of 267,613 Psychiatric Beds 239,044 Reasons. 1. Reimbursement. For example, in Massachusetts general hospitals reimbursed for psychiatric services by Medicaid at 39% less than their costs. 2. Shorter hospital stays covered by İnsurance. 3.
