The Deadly Truth About Painkillers

THE DEADLY TRUTH ABOUT PAINKILLERS Prescription drugs are helpful for a bit, but are as addictive as heroin, and can form dependence issues and create a risk for overdose that makes these deadly drugs not as great as people think. Every year, PERCOCET, VICODIN and other opioids KILL 17,000 AMERICANS. Opioid prescriptions have jumped 300% IN THE LAST DECADE, and hydrocodone-based drugs such as Vico- din are now the most commonly prescribed drugs on the market. With increased use comes more deaths – 46 people per day, or about 17,000 per year, die from prescription drug overdoses. These deaths are unintentional, and this number is up 400% from 1999. For every death, about 30 people are admitted to the ER for complications from opioid drug complications. THE DANGER DOESN'T STOP Despite recommendations from its own panel of experts, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a long-acting version of hydrocodone, the Zohydro ER. Attorney Gen- erals from 28 states have asked the FDA to FDA reconsider this decision, stating its potency makes it a target for misuse and abuse. But for now, the head of the FDA states that the drug's benefits outweigh the risks. 7. 6- 5- 3- 2- 1- 1999 2003 2007 2011 Opioid sales In kilograms per 10,000 people Opioid deaths Per 100,000 people SOURCE: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention So what are the benefits? Are there really benefits to opiates? The facts above state otherwise. 60 Percent of overdoses are from people who have only one doctor and not from people who are doctor-shoppers or from people who obtained the drugs illegally. 60% 1/3 of those people who overdosed were taking a low dose Little evidence exists that these drugs are safe or even work long-term The higher the dose and the longer you take it, the greater your risk SIDE EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OPIOID USE 23 Disrupt immune system and sex life Nausea and Doesn't allow a constipation clear head for physical activity For nerve pain, fibromyalgia and migraines, other drugs work better. Tighter controls – now need a prescription for most cough medicines and anything contain- ing hydrocodone Stronger labeling from the FDA Even when used for chronic pain, people still need to be careful to watch out for addiction.
