Cool Fact #3 : Medical Devices and Quality of Life

Cool Fact #3 Powered by NayaMed Medical Devices and Quality of Life Quality of life can be defined in many ways and spans the physical, psychological, social and economic well-being of individuals. Medical devices not only help to save and prolong lives, they also improve important aspects of patients' lives thus positively impacting their quality of life. Deep Brain Stimulation Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is used to treat a variety of disabling neurological symptoms and most commonly, the debilitating symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), such as tremor, rigidity, stiffness, slowed movement, and walking problems. Cochlear Implants Cochlear implants are electronic hearing devices for patients with severe to profound hearing loss. The implant directly stimulates functioning auditory nerves inside the cochlea to produce useful hearing sensations. ICDS with SVT Discrimination Implantable cardioverter defibrillators have beneficial effects for primary and secondary prevention patients. However, inappropriate ICD shocks due to SVT may increase morbidity, mortality and decrease patient quality of life. Improved supraventricular tachycardia discriminators, such as PR Logic and Wavelet help decrease inappropriate ICD therapy. Insulin Pump Rather than manually injecting insulin using syringes, a diabetic patient can use an insulin pump to programmatically deliver insulin. Patients are able to benefit from an insulin pump by optimizing insulin delivery to meet their specific therapy needs. CARTRIDGE 3 ml Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants Hip joint deterioration can lead to symptoms such as pain, stiffness or difficulty walking. When symptoms do not respond to conservative treatment, patients may be advised to undergo total hip replacement or hip resurfacing. Patients may receive a "metal-on-metal" hip implant in which the "ball and socket" of the device are both made from metal. Pain Pump Intrathecal drug delivery uses a small pump to deliver pain medication directly to the spinal cord. It is used to treat pain from a variety of conditions, such as chronic back and neck pain, sciatica, chronic abdominal pain, failed back and neck surgery, cancer and reflex sympathetic dystrophy or complex regional pain syndrome. Dental Implants Dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. Artificial Super Limbs Running blades were designed by American inventor and amputee Van Phillips in the 1970s. Made from 80 layers of carbon fibre, blades store kinetic energy from steps allowing the wearer to run and jump. Nayamed.
