Every year, 5.5 million people employed by hospitals provide vital health care services like these to millions of people in thousands of communities. In 2011, America's hospitals provided care for 526 million other outpatlents, treated 129 MILLION had 34.8 million patients admitted, PEOPLE in their performed 27 millon surgerles, emergency departments, and delivered nearly 4 million bables. In addition to providing traditional health care services and supporting their local economies, hospitals engage in an array of special activities to help meet communities' broader health and social needs. Hospitals offer: Health programs such as educational outreach, health screenings and support groups Subsidized health servicos (0.g., free clinics, vaccinations) Programs to address the social needs of communities (e.g., Meals on Wheels, various shelters) Health professions training programs for physicians, nurses Continuing education for health professionals Clinical rosearch and technical staff Hospital charity care programs provide care for free or on a sliding scale for patients with limited H American Hospital financial means.
