ALCOHOL AND BREAST CANCER Although moderate dinking has some health benefits, heavy dinking rcreases the risk for mary cancers, like those of the moulh, throat and liver, But even moderate drinking can increase a woman's risk for breast cancer, the second biggest cancer killer for women. BY THE NUMBERS 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. Every 2 minutes, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2013 more than 232,000 39,620 American women will be diagnosed with breast canoer. women will die from it. About 3.5% of all U.S. cancer deaths are linked to alcohol. WHO'S AT RISK? Gender and age are the biggest risk factors for breast cancer. Women have increased risk if they: • Have certain genetic mutations • Have not been pregnant • Used hormonal birth control or homone replacement therapy • Drink alcohol • Are overweight • Have a family history of breast cancer • Smoke - WHY ALCOHOL INCREASES THE RISK- More estrogen circulating increases breast cancer risk, alcohol and estrogen are prooessed in Ihe liver. If alcohol is being metabolized in the Tiver, it means estrogen spends more time in the bloodstream, - HOW MANY DRINKS FOR WOMEN? - In 2010, 46.5% of American women drank alcohol.
