7 Steps to a Healthier Heart Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women in the U.S. Follow these steps to be on your way to a healthier heart! Step 1: Eat Healthy • Eat more fruits, veggies, whole grains, and fat-free dairy. • Look for monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. • Reduce your salt, partially hydrogenated oils and added sugars. • Focus on making home cooked meals for your family. Step 2: Quit Smoking • Your risk of developing heart disease will be greatly reduced. • Your blood pressure and heart rate will fall to normal levels. Step 3: Manage Stress • Find someone to talk to about your problems. • Stay social with your friends and family. • Get enough sleep. • Treat yourself to something nice as a break. Step 4: Exercise • Your risk of developing coronary heart disease will be reduced. • Your risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol will also be reduced. • Try walking, biking, climbing stairs, or dancing. Step 5: Maintain a Healthy Weight • Diets don't work. • Excess weight puts stress on the heart. • Focus on living a healthy lifestyle. • Your risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure will be reduced. Step 6: Know Your Family History • Family history and heart disease are closely linked. • Talk with your immediate family members about any heart problems they have. • Talk with your doctor about any family history issues. Step 7: Educate the Next Generation • Heart-healthy skills are learned at a young age. • Teach your kids about blood sugar, diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol. • Make sure your kids play every day. • Talk to your kids about not smoking. • Make sure your kids are eating a healthy diet.
