2014 CANCER STATISTICS REPORT Despite continuing breakthroughs cancer remains a major health problem. One in four people in the United States will die of cancer. This infographic is an overview of cancer incidence, mortality, survival rates, and trends. It includes the number of cancer cases and deaths in the United States in 2014. TYPES OF CANCER First and foremost, there are perhaps as many as 200 different types of cancer, each named for the organ or type of cell from which it originates. Throat Cancer Lung Cancer Breast Cancer Stomach Cancer Bowel Cancer Bladder Cancer Prostate Cancer Testicular Cancer Uterus or Cervix Cancer Ovarian Cancer Skin Cancer WHO DOES CANCER AFFECT? 1 in 35 men will suffer from cancer before the age of 50 1 in 20 is the risk for women 1 in 10,000 children develop cancer STAGES OF CANCER A cell that becomes a cancer cell usually does so in the Stage 0 'in situ' company of other similar cells. Stage 1 'localized cancer At the next stage, the cancer cells gain the ability to pass through the 'basement membrane'. Stage 2&3 "regional spread" Once a cancer cell has invaded, a common next step is for one of its daughter cells to invade through a lymph vessel. Stage 4 'distant spread' Cells from the lump in the lymph node may spread further through lymph vessels to more distant lymph nodes.
