50 |THE MEGATSUNAMI OF LITUYA BAY ANNIVERSARY Lituya On July 9, 1958 an earthquake caused a landslide that in turn created the megatsunami of Lituya Bay in -Fairtar Alaska. The wave rose to 1,720 feet and two of the four Canada Mcrthy boaters who witnessed the tsunami were killed at the Lituya Bay site. This year marks the 5oth anniversary of the biggest tsunami to ever be recorded. An earthquake occurs along the Fairweather faultline causing an estimated 40 million cubic yards of dirt and glacier to fall into the Gilbert Inlet. The massive landslide created a wave which reached 1,720 feet at its maximum height reaching 3,600 feet inland leaving behind a barren shoreline.
