arthquake Epicenter Tokyo? HELP JAPAN On Friday March 11th, 2011 an earthquake of 9.0 magnitude triggered a tsunami hitting the coastline of Japan destroying everything in its path. Here is the trail of destruction it produced and how you can help. OTHE EARTHQUAKE All data compiled as of March 22, 2011 O MAGNITUDE O TRAVELING SPEED O GEOPHYSICAL IMPACT The fifth most powerful earthquake ever recorded. 2.5 MILES/SEC The quake moved portions of Northeast Japan closer to North America as much as Originating in the Pacific Ocean, seismic S-waves reached Tokyo, 232 miles away in 90 seconds. 7.9 FEET O SURFACE ENERGY The speed of the Earth's rotation has increased, The surface energy generated could power the city of Los Angeles for a year. shortening the day by 1.8 MICROSECONDS Over 500 aftershocks of a magnitude of 4.5 or greater Occurred since the initial quake. The amount of energy released was equivalent to 9.32 teratons of TNT. The quake has shifted the Earth's axis 25 centimeters. THE TSUNAMI TSUNAMI HEIGHT O TRAVELING SPEED 33 FEET 500 MPH The tsunami originated in the Pacific Ocean, taking 10 to 30 minutes to reach the coastine of Japan, in some cases traveling up to 6 mies inland.
