But for a lot of young people (and the young at heart), Sony is known for its power- ful videogame consoles. To fully understand why kids, teens and adults have spent thou- sands of dollars and hours on these awesome PSVITA Like the PS1, the PS2 Slim is only a more compact model of the PS2, retaining the foundations of the first one while packaging it in a cooler, more portable design. But because of its new slim look, Sony had to sacrifice the hard disk drive add-on support. Besides the aesthetic change, it's also online-ready with a built-in 56Kbps modem jack and Ethernet port. In 2004, Sony decided to expand its VG industry reach by making its first portable gaming console called the PSP. Although Sony did not quite attain the same level of success with the PSP, it still sold very well-a little over 70 million units by 2011-and created a more hardcore niche with its PS2 level graphics and storage capacity. Of course, Sony soon took its strategy of coming up The advanced graphics technology in the Playstation 2 made it possible for developers to create even more beautiful visuals using its processor that could display millions of polygons onscreen, as well as its Emotion engine that could render all kinds of fantastic effects. Sony followed the pattern of releasing a trimmed As Sony's first foray into the videogame industry, the first PlayStation (abbreviated as the PSX) was a breakout success when it was released in Japan in 1994. A year later, it was released worldwide. Released in 2000 as a slight upgrade to the PSX, the PS1 only has a couple of distinct features compared to the original model. It still ran on the same technology, but it differed in its smaller and sleeker design, as well As the latest dedicated home console, the PS3 is also currently the most powerful one. It came out first in Japan in 2006, then shipped to other countries soon after. It is the first piece of hardware that used the Blu-ray format, taking full advantage of its 25GB to 50GB storage capaci- ty, as well as its 1080p video support through games packed with high-definition graphics and complex game- play. The true successor to the PSP was just released early this 2012, showcasing a sharper, more graph- ially-intensive portable gaming device. It utilizes a quad-core processor to run gorgeous games on the five-inch OLED multi-touch capacitive screen. In addition, the PS Vita has two analog sticks compared to the PSP's one, while also featuring a rear touchpad and a motion sensor for even more control. with slimmer models of their home consoles to the version of its home consoles with the PS3 Slim in 2009. portable arena with the PSP Go in 2009. as a new graphical user interface. The PS1 also added some hardware tweaks to prevent illegal modification, multiplayer connectivity and use of third-party hard- Again, it carries over the technological aspects of the original, while saving space and power with its reduced size and more efficient system. What really lured people into buying the system was the afforda- ble price tag, coming out in half the cost of the original Boasting of an im pressive 32-bit full 3D gameplay which was unheard of by then, the PSX took the world by storm. It captured a more mature audience's imagination with classic videogames, such as Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil 2. It established Sony's dominance in the market for more than a decade. Unfortunately, things did not turn out well for this redesign. It did away with the UMD platform in favor of complete internal storage, forcing gamers to buy all their games online through the PlayStation Store at full price. Most gamers held on to their PSPS that had most of the same tech specs, scoffing at the Go's $250 price and strict limitations. It was discontinued outside of North America in 2011. The advent of the DVD greatly helped since the digital format could store a lot more data compared to the old CD-ROM, making development cheaper by getting rid of the need to use multiple discs for just one game. Games now come in another exclusive format called the PS Vita card, although they can also be bought online through the PlayStation Store. For data storage, the Vita can only use the PS Vita Memory Cards that can store up to 32GB of data. ware. PS3. Its games run on the Universal Media Disc (UMD) plat- form created by Sony. The PSP allows users to view images, and play music and videos stored on Memory Sticks (another Sony proprietary format) that can hold up to 8GB of data. It also supports online surfing through WiFi and a handy web browser. Another big upgrade it had over the PS2 was the integrat- ed hard disk drive, beginning with a 20GB storage capaci- ty in the first models up to the latest model sporting a whopping 320GB. One thing the earlier versions have Sony has come a long way from its beginnings in 1994, experiencing the highest highs and the lowest lows in its almost two-decade console development history. If there's one thing that can be taken from its evolution in the industry, it's that Sony can thrive even in the most competitive mar- machines, one only has to trace the evolution of Sony's gaming consoles. Another great plus is its backwards compatibility which allows owners to play their PSX games on the system. In some cases, the PS2 improved their graphi- cal output. Because of all these factors, the PS2 still stands today as the best-selling console of all time with more than 150 million units sold (as of 2011). over the latter ones is the now discontinued backwards kets. compatibility with PS2 games. The PS3 was also built with in mind, as it has full online support, tooth 2.0 capability, and multiple USB ports for data trans- fer.
