A Glimpse at the World of Tea Since the first discovery that tea could be consumed as a drink by Emperor Shen Nung nearly 5000 years ago, tea consumption has grown rapidly, and nowadays over three billion cups of tea are consumed daily worldwide. Tonnes per annum Health Aspects WHAT IS INGREENTEA? Tea contains numerous compounds including antioxidants such as catechins and theaflavins; fiber; minerals and vitamins B,C and E The composition of green tea leaf dry weight -Phenolic Compounds (32.3%) Many of these compounds are known to be beneficial to health. Some of the positive health benefits that have been reported to be coorelated to tea consumption include the prevention of various cancers, lowering of blood pressure and weight loss. Fiber (28.0%)- Other (4.3%) Lipids (2.2%) Over 4,000 different types of flavonoids have been identified in Green tea, including an average of 90 mg of catechins per cup. - Minerals (5.4%) -Carbohydrates (7.5%) Proteins (10.1%)- Amino Acids (4.3%) Other polyphenols found in green tea include gallic acid (GA), chlorogenic acids, caffeic acid and the flavonols kaempferol, myricetin and quercetin.
