FOOD YOU MUST TRY IN AMSTERDAM Although not much is known about the Dutch cuisine, Netherlands has a number of mouth-watering foods that you must try whenever you are in Amsterdam. In fact, by sampling some of these delights you will definitely desire to have even more. Some of these foods include the following: PANNENKOEKEN POFFERTJES These are pancakes that are crepe like and they are made from buckwheat that is topped either with cheese, bacon, chocolate, whipped cream, strawberries or sushi. Pannenkoeken are made on a pan. Pofferrtjes are another kind of pancakes that are also made with buckwheat flour and yeast. These pancakes are fluffy and are best served with butter and powdered sugar. This Dutch food is common during winter and fall and you can find then in every street and outdoor markets. STROOPWAFELS BITTERBALLEN Get to enjoy these chewy cookies that are quite delicious. Stroopwafels make great snacks that are best eaten with a cup of tea or coffee. Their sizes vary even though they are wide enough to serve as a cover for the hot beverage that consequently softens them. You cannot talk about the Dutch cuisine without mentioning Bitterballen, one of the most popular snacks that you will find in both bars and cafes. They are filled with a mixture of beef broth, chopped beef, herbs, butter and spices. They are crunchy and are served with mustard. Be sure to sample them. HOLLANDSE NIEUWE HARING STAMPPOT Every person must try this traditional Dutch food at least once. This special fish is caught between May and July and is served when raw with chopped onions and bread. This fish is prepared traditionally by leaving the pancreas so that the pancreatic enzymes preserve it. The traditional way of eating this Dutch herring is by simply holding the fish by the tail before dunking it in the mouth with the head thrown back. Another traditional Dutch food that is tasty, nutritious, hearty and common during winter. It is a heavy dish consisting of mashed potatoes as well as vegetables and is served with smoked sausage known as rookworst. There are different versions of stamppot namely the stamppot boerenkool that is too popular, stamppot rauwe andijvie (raw endive), zuurkoolsauerkraut) and hutspot (onions and carrots). PATAT LIMBURGSE VLAAI Patat is a part of the Dutch cuisine that refers to chips, frites or simply French fries. They are best served with large portions of mayonnaise. Patat is mostly eaten with a side dish like kroket and frikandel that are both meaty snacks. Other unique toppings that may accompany patat include patatje oorlog. that is a mix of mayo, peanut sauce and onions or patat special that includes mayonnaise, curry ketchup and onion. This delicious pie comes with a tasty but light crust and is usually filled with fruits such as apricots and cherries. It is unique because the batter that is used is lighter compared to that used for the traditional pie crust and it is more of a cake than pie. In addition, it is thinner and platter than the normal pies. HAGELSLAG DROP Opinions vary about this licorice candy, available in a plethora of forms and flavors, from hard and salty to soft and sweet. Dutchies love the dark, distinctively flavored candy. They boast the highest per capita consumption of it in the world. Chocolate sprinkles on a sandwich is enjoyed by young and old.
