Food for the Masses

A Food for the Masses Once upon a time . in January of 1999, Monsanto executives planned and strategized their method to have 100% of commercial seeds genetically modified and patented. Previously, as a chemical company, Monsanto polluted the landscape with some of the most poisonous substances ever produced, contaminated every human and animal on Earth, and got fined and convicted of deception and wrong doing. So, they redefined themselves as a "life-sciences" company. Today, they are mostly known for their genetically modified seeds. Today: As of 2005, Monsanto owns Seminis, who controls: 90% 30% 70% 40%)& 20% of all US Grown Corn, of the land in the US Soybeans, Canola and Sugar Beets are GMO of supermarket food has at least one GMO of the US vegetable seed market is used to grow corn of the global market ingredient MM Thus, supplying the genetics for: 55% of lettuce 75% of tomatoes 85% of peppers on US supermarket shelves But Monsanto doesn't only make food; they are also the makers of: Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses known to compete with commercial crops grown around the globe. It was discovered to be a herbicide by Monsanto chemist John E. Franz in 1970. Monsanto brought it to market in the 1970s under the trade name Roundup. Roundup Agent Orange is a defoliant herbicide mixture used during the Vietnam War to destroy forests in Vietnam. The United States sprayed 20 million gallons of Agent Orange over forests in Vietnam, and as a result, members of the armed forces were exposed to it. AGENT ORANGE Dioxin is the name given to a group of 200+ chemicals that are formed as unwanted by-products of industrial manufacturing and buning activities. The major sources of dioxins include chemical and pesticide manufacture, buming household trash, forest fires, and burning of industrial and medical waste products. rBGH Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is a synthetic (man-made) hormone that is marketed to dairy farmers to ncrease milk production in cows. It has been used in the United States since it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993, but its use is not permitted in the European Union, Canada, and some other countries. DIOXIN & rBGH And due to Roundup: More than 130 types of weeds spanning 40 U.S. states are now herbicide resistant, and the superweeds are showing no signs of stopping Monsanto's PR campaign about why GMO's are necessary are based on five (5) principles: All of these I GMOS are needed to feed the world principles have 2 GMOS increase yield 3 GMOS have been throughly tested and proven safe been proven 4 GMOS reduce the use of agricultural chemicals 5 GMOS can be contained, and therefore coexist with non-GM crops FALSE 1 The Ministry of Agriculture has found a direct correlation 2 According to the Union of Concerned Scientists: per- acre between the adaptation of GM cotton and the suicide rate of Indian farmers. 90% of Indian farmers have adopted the GM cotton as of a decade ago. As the years go by. the yield of these crops are declining as the main pest, the bull worm, grows immune to the plants genetically inserted defense mechanisms. corn production in the United States has increased 28 percent since the early 1990s. Genetic engineering is responsible for only 14 percent of that increase (or 4 percent of total U.S. yield increase); the majority of the increase is attributable to traditional breeding and other agricultural methods. Contribution of Genetic A study published by the International Journal of Engineering to U.S. Corn Yield Increase, Biological Sciences found: • Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death. Early 1990s to Present Genetic • Rats that drank trace amounts of Engineerng Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors. • Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage. Conventional Methods · The study fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that's grown across North America and widely fed to 4 Despite claims that genetical- ly modified organisms (GMOS) animals and humans. This is the same corn that's in your corn-based breakfast cereal, tortillas and corn snack chips. will lower the levels of chemicals (pesticides and herbicides) used, quite the opposite has occurred, with 1.6 billion pounds of glyphosate (the active in ingredient in Roundup) being applied to American soil in 2007 alone. This is of great concern both because of the negative Accidental cross-pollination by way of the wind or cross pollination from bees are no reason for profit loss. Any farm found to have Monsanto's impacts of these chemicals on ecosystems and humans, and because there is the danger that increased chemical use will patented genetics in their crops will be prosecuted for patent infringement. cause pests and weeds develop resistance, requiring even more chemicals in order to manage them.
