On average, one American will drink 348 cans of beverage (that includes beer) per year. Roughly one per day - that's an average of 44.7 gallons consumed per person, per year.
I was shocked to learn...
that the additional 300 calories per day that American's consume now more than 20 years ago, comes mostly from sweet beverages - and that's considered to be the cause of the obesity epidemic. Not all calories are equal. Sugar doesn't provide any nutrients or trace elements so it's not a great use of land area for feeding humans.
When we consider that obesity is the cause of 300,000 premature deaths per year (which is not too far behind tobacco, which kills 443,000 people per year) it's not a far stretch to argue that soda and tobacco are brothers in arms of corporate killers. Sadly obesity is not a new wave of pro-women feminism, it is a killer disease from corporate sugar-pushing on vulnerable victims.
The WWF also claim sugar plantations may well be responsible for more biodiversity loss than any other crop. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has shown significant signs of decline. Why is the Great Barrier Reef exposed to such a bombardment of nitrates, sediments and phosphorus? Most of the land adjacent to the reef grows sugar plantations. Phosphorus and nitrogen used on sugar plantations run into waterways all over the world, leading the eutrophication and fill kills.
