Anatomy of a Chicago-Style Hotdog

ANATOMY OF A HOT DOG How Chicago 'drags it through the garden' Unless you've been living here for only a week and have spent most of that week under a rock, you're probably familiar with the Chicago-style hot dog. But what goes in to this one-of-a-kind culinary delight? Here's a handy diagram so you can I.D. all the right parts of the unique wiener. VIENNA BEEF SAUSAGE The heart of the dog is the all- beef kosher sausage. Steamed or a char-dog, your choice. SS DILL PICKLE SPEAR The meat's bedmate, the dill pickle lies next to the sausage. Forever. CHOPPED ONIONS A staple on many kinds of dogs, the diced white flavor bits are present on the Chicago-style as well. ....... DILL CELERY SALT Just a dash can make all the difference - don't forget it! .... POPPY-SEED BUN Firm but spongy, this bun is made to stand up to steam-heating. TOMATOES Two slices frame the sausage. MUSTARD Get that ketchup out of here. Yellow mustard is the only appropriate condiment for the Chicago Dog - most purists can't even stomach the sight of the "red menace." BELISH "NEON" RELISH The bright green sweet relish is a must-have for flavor and color. Without it, you just have a sad sandwich with little-to-no swag. SPORT PEPPERS Some say any chili peppers will do, but the Sport Pepper has the perfect amount of heat and crunch, BROUGHT TO YOU BY Jewel Osco.
