Wind: Our New Source of Energy
WIND:OUR NEW SOURCE OF ENERGY Wind energy has grown by 29.7% (on average) every year over the past decade and if that exponential rate of growth continues, the US could derive 20% of its energy from wind by 2020. WIND CAPACITY INSTALLED WIND CAPACITY USA (IN MEGA WATTS) 50,000 40,000 30,000 20,000 10,000 2003 2007 2009 2011 2012 50,000 megawatts (MW) of wind power capacity installed in the United States and another 8,300 MW of wind power under construction as the year began 50,000 MEGAWATTS = 50 MILLION HOMES Installing four million turbines could yield up to 7.5 TW, more than enough to power half the world's power demand in 2030. WORLD WIND POWER 28% ***.................... ****...* 4% 11% 13% 18% ....** 26% Today, U.S. wind power capacity represents more than 20% of the world's installed wind power. SPENDING Annual U.S. wind operations and maintenance spending is estimated to double to nearly $6 billion by 2025. The three primary components in a wind turbine-generating site that requires regular servicing: Turbine Blades Gear Box Generator They estimate these items alone represent 80% of the total turbine maintenance cost. MAINTENANCE COSTS Preventative Maintenance Unscheduled Maintenance Major Planned Overhauls 5% 75% 20% The opportunity is in the potential to reduce reactive category from 75% to 25% by implementing sound predictive maintenance practices. $40 billion worth of wind installations are at (or near) the end of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) warranty periods. REDUCING THE COST A Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system is the ideal means to manage required maintenance activities such as: 1. PLANNING SCHEDULING DOCUMENTATION Currently, the systems that enable wind farms to implement predictive maintenance, rather than reactive maintenance are systemically underutilized, in the wind industry. The study by EPRI revealed a potential maintenance cost savings of 47% by using predictive maintenance techniques.
