Pollution Types - Sources and Effects

POLLUTION TYPES SOURCES AND EFFECTS MAIN TYPES OF POLLUTION ADDITIONAL TYPES WATER POLLUTION AIR POLLUTIO SOIL POLLUTION NOISE POLLUTION RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION THERMAL POLLUTION LIGHT POLLUTION VISUAL POLLUTION AND PERSONAL POLLUTION MAIN TYPES S OURCES E FFECTS Disposal of coal ash, munitions and agents of war Agricultural activities Sewage spills, accidental oil spills Effect on Health of Humans Strip mining Hazardous waste Effect on Growth of Plants SOIL POLLUTION Acid rain Decreased Soil Fertility Electronic waste Landfills Toxic Dust Household dumping and littering Changes in Soil Structure Deforestation and other destructive practices Drainage of contaminated surface water in the soil Effect on Growth of Plants The ecological balance of any system gets affected due to the widespread contamination of the soil. Most plants are unable to adapt when the chemistry of the soil changes so radically in a short period of time. Fungi and bacteria that soil bind it together begin to decline, which creafes an additional problem of soil erosion. Agricultural activities Genetically modified plants and non-sustainable farming practices, such as the heavy use of inorganic pesticides Effect on Health of Humans Long term exposure to such soil can affect the genetic make-up of the body, causing congenital illnesses and chronic health problems that cannot be cured /leukemia, kidney damage, liver toxicity, neuromuscular' blockage, headache, nausea, 'fatigue, eye irritation and skin rash/ At sufficient dosages a large number of soil contaminants can cause death by exposure via direct contact, inhalation or ingestion of contaminants in groundwater contaminated through soil. Landfills Soil pollution caused by creation of landfill is' deliberate and strictly controlled easily. Fumes from paint, hair spray, varnish, aerosol sprays and other solvents Stationary sources Impact of air pollution on health AIR POLLUTION Mobile sources Acidification Waste deposition in landfills, which generate methane. Stratospheric ozone depletion and Ground-level ozone Natural sources Global warming Controlled burn practices in agriculture and forest management. Stationary sources Smoke stacks of power plants, manufacturing facilities (factories), waste incinerators, furnaces and other types of fuel- burning heating devices and Biomass burning Impact of air pollution on health Air pollution is a significant risk factor for a number of heafth conditions including respiratory infections, heart disease, COPD, stroke and lung cancer. The health effects caused by air pollution may include difficulty in breathing, wheezing, coughing, asthma and worsening of existing respiratory and cardiac condifions. These effects can result in increased medication use, increased doctor or emergency room visits, more hospital admissions and premature death. Mobile sources Include motor vehicles, marine vessels, and aircraft. Acidification Acid rain, a form of precipitation that contains high levels of sulfuric or nitric acids, can contaminate drinking water and vegetation, damage aquatic life, and erode 'buildings Natural sources Forest fires, volcanic eruptions, dry soil erosion, and other Controlled burn practices in agriculture and forest management. Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool for foresters. Stratospheric ozone depletion and Ground-level ozone Ozone layer in the stratosphere is vitally important to life because it absorbs biologically harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation coming from the sun but Gas Ozone can affect people's health and can damage vegetation 'types and some animal life. Industrial waste Sewage and waste water Mining activities Death of aquatic (water) animals Marine dumping WATER POLLUTION Disruption of food-chains Accidental Oil leakage Burning of fossil fuels Diseases Leakage Chemical fertilizers and pesticides Destruction of ecosystems Radioactive and Animal waste Global warming and Urban development Death of aquatic (water) animals The main problem caused by water pollution is that it kills life that depends on these water bodies. Dead fish, crabs, birds and sea gulls, dolphins, and many other animals often wind up on beaches, killed by pollutants in their habitat (living environment). Point and Non Point Sources Point refer to the pollutants that belong to a single source, Non Point on the other hand means pollutants emitted from multiple sources. Disruption of food-chains Pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by tiny animals. Later, these animals are consumed by fish and shellfish, and the food chain continues to be disrupted at all higher levels. Leakage Diseases People can get diseases such as hepatítis by eating seafood that has been poisoned. In many poor nations, there is always outbreak of cholera and diseases as a result of poor drinking water treatment from contaminated waters. Leakage from sewer lines and landfills, Underground storage leakage Destruction of ecosystems Ecosystems (the interaction of living things in a place, depending on each other for life) can be severely changed or destroyed by water pollution. Many areas are now being affected by careless human pollution, and this pollution is coming back to hurt humans in many ways. ADDITIONAL TYPES Traffic Effects may include hearing loss, wildlife disturbances, and a general degradation of lifestyle. Airports Railroads NOISE POLLUTION Concerts Manufacturing plants Construction or demolition Nuclear power plant accidents or leakage RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION Radiation pollution can cause birth defects, cancer, sterilization, and other health problems for human and wildlife populations. It can also sterilize the soil and contribute to water and air pollution. Uranium mining operations Improper nuclear waste disposal Power plants As temperatures increase, mi climatic changes may be observed, and wildlife populations may be unable to recover from swift changes. Urban sprawl Deforestation THERMAL POLLUTION Air pollution particulates that trap heat Loss of temperature moderating water supplies Consequences of light pollution are energy waste, effects on human health and psychology (increased headache incidence, worker fatigue, medically defined stress, decrease in sexual function and increase in anxiety), threats to wildlife by disrupting biological rhythms and otherwise interfering with the behavior of nocturnal animals, aso disruption of ecosystems. Light pollution makes it impossible to see stars, therefore interfering with astronomical observation Large cities Billboards and advertising LIGHT POLLUTION Nighttime sporting events Other nighttime entertainment Personal pollution causes several detrimental effects on the human body, including severe disorders such as heart ailments, diabetes and liver cirrhosis. Other serious effects include neurological diseases, respiratory ailments and cancer. Emotional or physical abuse Poor personal attitudes PERSONAL POLLUTION Poor living conditions and habits Excessive smoking, drinking or drug abuse Visual pollution has few immediate health or environmental effects. Effects on humans of exposure to visual pollution include: distraction, eye fatigue, decreases in opinion diversity. and loss of identity.
