Paris Climate Change Conference in Numbers What exactly are the challenges facing the 195 countries meeting in Paris from 30th November to 11th December? 30% rise in CO2 levels since the Industrial Revolution. 4% decline in Arctic sea ice levels since 1970 1 degree celsius 9 out of 10 hottest years have occurred since 2000. rise in average global temperature since 1850 2011-2015 was the warmest five year period on record. 2 degree celsius £100 billion in private finance will be required by 2020 by developed nations the agreed "gateway" to global warming. $30 billion the amount of "fast start" aid that rich nations have promised poor ones to help them combat climate change. President Barack Obama is seeking to position the USA as a global leader, and hoping to reverse years of inaction on climate change. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has made a more sustained commitment to peaking carbon emissions by the year 2030. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written in the UK newspaper The Financial Times to warn that developing nations must play a leading role to combat climate change. More than 170 countries representing 97% of the world's emissions have submitted their climate pledges to the UN.
