Industrial Disaster TOP TRUMPS Banqiao Dam - China In 1975 the Banqiao Reservoir Dam failed causing more fatalities that any other dam failure in history. Originally the dam failure was attributed to a natural disaster rather than a man-made disaster. The government blamed the failure on a once in a 2000 year flood that occurred and stated that the dam was built to withstand 300mm of rain fall per day however on the day on the collapse over 1000mm of rain fell. The dam like many others of that time was badly made and incorrectly maintained and when the failure occurred it released almost 16billion m3 of water upon neighbouring towns causing a wave 10 kilometers wide and up to 7 meters high to sweep through at almost 50kilometers per hour. The majority of deaths were not owed to the wave but more to epidemic and famine that occurred during the rescue operation. The resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere over a substantial geographical area. Chenobyl - Ukraine The most severely contaminated areas of high radiation have become exclusion zones and large areas of land are now uninhabitable and will remain so for the next 20,000 years. The total death toll is widely disputed owed to cancer being a resulting illnesses of exposure to radiation. Cancer rates have risen in the surrounding area since the incident but the true amount is unknown. The gas made its way around nearby shanty towns killing 2,259 instantly followed by another 8000 within the next 2 weeks. The reason for the leak has been long debated by many experts have claimed that the storage tanks were filled beyond recommended levels and were poorly maintained. Even today the local area remains to be contaminated although this is blamed on the fact that the deteriorating portion of the plant responsible still remains today. Caused by a leaking fuel line the explosion created a quake which measured at 2.4 on the Richter scale and was so loud that it was heard in neighbouring countries. The Smoke cloud that developed could be seen from space and locals who witnessed the event claimed that flames reached up hundreds of feet into the air. Instant deaths; 0 The owners of Buncefield's Oil Storage Terminal have been under scrutiny for having lacklustre safety precautions safety protocols and have since had to pay out over 10 million to cover legalities and compensate those affected.
