History of Recycling in Australia First Steps 1815 The First Australian paper mill was opened. 1915 BHP Steel began industrial steel recycling. 1920s Melbourne was the first city to start waste paper collection from homes and factories. Changing Attitudes 1975 Canterbury Council was the first to use magnetic separation to recover steel waste. 1980s Sydney introduced the first kerbside recycling schemes. Australia became one of the first countries 1992 with a national voluntary recycling plan. Recent Developments The Australian Government started National 2012 Television and Computer Recycling Scheme in order to encourage the recycling of e- waste. The construction of a premium paper 2013 recycling plant began in Maryvale, Victoria.
