The History of Plastic John Wesley Hyatt John Wesley Hyatt participated in a contest for the best substitute for natural ivory. He successfully developed a cellulose derivative and later on the patented the product under the name Celluloid. Hyatt's product was used for manufacturing various products like men's collars or dental plates. 1860 Eastman For his very first movie a young photography pioneer - Eastman used Celluloid. The advantage of the product was that it was very easy to shape it in different forms. 1882 Bakelite The appearance of the first completely synthetic manmade plastic - Bakelite. The product was made from a resin from coal tar and its great advantage was that it would take the shape of its own container. Another benefit was that Bakelite didn't melt and saves its shape even under great heat or pressure. Lucite and Nylon 1907 During the 1920s and 1930s were designed many plastic products for the first time. This includes products like Lucite and Nylon. 1920s 1930s Teflon The 1950s was the time when the first polyester clothing appeared. It gained extreme popularity because the fabric didn't need ironing, it was cheap, easy to produce and you could wash it easy. Completely by chance the Teflon was discovered. The name of the man that did that was Plunkett. After tests and researches he managed to discover the non-stick coating on cookware known nowadays as Teflon. 1938 The late 1950s was also the time when the first plastic bags appeared. Lucite and Nylon 1950s 1960s The material known nowadays as fleece was created by Malden Mills. This was the first form of synthetic clothing and it was sold under the trademark Polarfleece.
