This scenario for a global energy mix in 2035 is based on recent predictions by the International Energy Agency (IEA). This is the future the IEA believes we are heading for if the world's governments...
follow through on all their current promises and commitments on energy and climate change. In other words, this future is not the worst-case scenario – it's the best that politicians and businesses are currently offering us.
In this future, there has been some growth in renewable energy generation, but for the most part we remain addicted to fossil fuels. This has locked us in to a century of runaway climate change putting the current goal of less than 2°C global warming way out of reach. A recent report for the World Bank stated: "A world in which warming reaches 4°C … would be one of unprecedented heat waves, severe drought, and major floods in many regions, with serious impacts on human systems, ecosystems, and associated services."
