Fire in South Africa: Affects and Prevention

FIRE IN SOUTH AFRICA A BURNING ISSUE. HOW ARE MOST FIRES STARTED? Smoking Electrical Open Flames 4% 43% Cooking Heating Arson 2% 3% (The remaining 36% is undefined) NEW FIRE PREVENTION ADVANCES Infra-red technology to detect invisible, electrically related, fire risks. Water drenchers on the peak of thatched roofs on homes or tourist hotels. Advanced, computerised risk assessments to replace paper lists which reduce human error and oversights. FIRE PREVENTION SUGGESTIONS All fire protection equipment, such as portable fire extinguishers and fire hose reels, need to be serviced and maintained in fully operational condition. Waste and rubbish is a breeding ground for fire. More big fires start in storage areas than in production areas. Badly stored goods may help to spread the fire, impede fire-fighters from gaining access to the source of a fire, or render useless the operation of sprinkler heads. Inadequately maintained machines are liable to cause fire. The overheating of bearings, due to insufficient lubrication, the presence of dust, and heat caused by friction, are common causes of fire. Negligence in handling small quantities of flammable liquids is a frequent cause of fires and injuries. The maintenance of buildings is an essential part of fire protection. Much of the arson is associated with vandalism and burglaries. Building owners should be reminded to execute a "hot work permit system" for operations such as welding, grinding or any hot work performed on the premises to ensure fire protection backup is at hand during this risky activity Fires are fast to break out, which is why a quick reaction is critical to make sure they are effectively controlled. Each employee must know the right action they should take during a fire emergency. ADVICE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS Before purchasing a property encourage certification of sprinkler systems by the ASIB (Automatic Sprinkler Inspection Bureau) with regular tests thereafter Highlight the statistical value of sprinkler systems in appropriate buildings Promote high staff awareness through regular fire drills, fire- prevention education and maintenance of fire fighting equipment.
