Earth Overshoot Day

Dyneema' 360 Earth Overshoot Day While economies, populations and resource demands grow, the size of the planet remains the same. In the mid 1970s, we crossed the critical threshold and human demand on nature began outstripping what it could renewably produce, a condition known as ecological overshoot. The New Economics Foundation developed the Earth Overshoot Day, also known as 'Ecological Debt Day' concept. This is the date each year where the total resources consumed by humanity will exceed the capacity for the Earth to generate those resources that year. Earth Overshoot Day = [World Biocapacity/ World Ecological Footprint]x365 Earth Overshoot Day was first observed on December 19, 1987 On average, each year it has fallen on an earlier date than the previous year. In 2012 it was on the 22nd of August 26th October 23rd September 25th September 21st August 27th September 22nd August 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 In 2012, Earth Overshoot Day comes as the UN is projecting the human population to reach 7 billion in late October Humanity is outstripping the Earth's resources by 50%, essentially using the resources of 1 and a half Earths every year That's like spending your annual salary 3 months before the year is over, and eating into savings year after year. Soon you will have no savings left! "Overshoot" is driven by 3 factors: Technology has helped expand biological productivity over the years, but that expansion can't keep up with the rate at which population and resource demand are growing How much we consume The total global population How much nature can produce In the past 50 years, humans have consumed more resources than in all previous history. The top 5 'greediest resource users per capita are (in order from most to least): 1. Qatar 2. Kuwait 3. United Arab Emirates 4. Denmark 5. United States The best wind farms in the world already produce power as economically as coal, gas and nuclear generators ...and 21% of Denmark's electricity now comes from wind! Enough sunlight falls on the earth in one hour to power the entire world for a year! $1 BI Every $1 invested in energy efficiency saves at least $2 in energy expenses! $2 Ĉ Going green is not more expensive! Cutting carbon emissions is profitable because it increases the efficiency of businesses, of homes and society as a whole DSM Dyneema is committed to ensuring we live within our natural resource means. Rope made with Dyneema® is being used to build both offshore and inland wind farms and line made with Dyneema® is being used by innovative green projects such as SkySails and Kite Power.
