Chinese Students Abroad, By The Numbers According to the Chinese Ministry of Education, from 1978 to the end of 2011, China sent 2.25 million students abroad, 90% of the total number of students coming after 2000. Between 2000 and 2010, the number of Chinese students studying abroad grew by 28.2% per year. Since 2006, the year-on-year growth rates in the number of Chinese students studying abroad have become especially dramatic. In 2011, a record 340,000 Chinese students travelled overseas to attend educational institutions.
