How can you stay out of the underemployment trap? Now more than ever, it's critical to think of your career as a lifelong process. *2013 jobs report shows the economy added nearly 2.2 5 WAYS TO STEP INTO YOUR CAREER MILLION JOBS ONE I EDUCATION Look for online courses or certificates to update your skills. Move yourself from the back of the employment line to the front. *Unemployment rate fell in December 2013 to: TWO I RESEARCH Research industries that are hiring and match your skills with positions that have strong growth and potential pay (i.e. food service is growing, so take your IT skills to a big franchise or corporate food service company). Use free resources like CareerOneStop.org. 6.7% THREE I NETWORK Use resources like LinkedIn and University Pages to help you network with alumni, faculty and others who work in your desired profession. Attend career fairs to make new connections and research potential employers, even if you are not looking for a new job at the moment.
