Instructional Technology Tools Throughout History The Blackboard 1801 A headmaster and Overhead Projector geography teacher in Šotland hangs a large piece of slate on the wall – the first blackboard. AMC The first prototype of the overhead projector is used at temperance and religious lectures in Victorian society. A COLLERE 1870s Filmstrips Filmstrips become popular in American classrooms and are used through the 1970s. Strips of still images are fed into a projector, turned manually and accompanied by taped narration. 1940s Transparency Pages After successful use by the U.S. military, transparency pages become widely used in schools and businesses - projecting content onto a screen. (1950s Videotape The advent of videotape recorders and the videocassette format replaces the use of filmstrips in schools. 1970s Smartboard Meet the first interactive whiteboard, developed by Xerox Parc. These smartboards become ideal for small group meetings and roundtables. 1990s Computer Advancements Advances in multimedia hardware and affordable computers pave the way for digitized reference works. An entire encyclopedia now can fit on a few CD-ROM disks. LMS Age 1996 Learning Management Systems (LMS) are used for the first time to deliver, organize and assess learning. Online 2000s Programs Higher education goes fully online utilizing technology that provides students rich, open access to continuing study. Through advanced LMS systems like Engage and Blackboard, access to education isn't limited by location.
