A History of Learning Prehistory Before the written word, knowledge was expressed through stories, folklore, cave paintings and songs. They were sharpened by what we now call the 'pen-knife'. 1088 The first learning institution to be called a 'university' was formed, the University of Bologna. Love it! 1880 The UK Education Act of 1880 made schooling compulsory for all children aged 5-10 years old. 1899 20th Century Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi sent the first wireless transmission across the English Corporal punishment had been commonplace in education and children could be caned, whipped, flogged or birched. This practice was finally banned in UK state schools in 1987. Channel. In 1901 he succeeded in sending a message across the Atlantic Ocean. 1909 Arctic Explorer Robert E. During WWII the code-breakers of Bletchley Park, including Alan Turing, used an early electronic computer to decipher secret Nazi messages and helped to end the war. I found the pole! 1st e Martin Cooper of Motorola made the first mobile phone call. The mobile phone he used weighed over a kilogram and really was the size of a brick. It had a talk-time of 1973 30 minutes and took 10 hours to recharge! 1995 The internet experienced explosive growth as it began to be used widely by businesses, schools and individuals. 1st 2007-2008 Smartphones have revolutionised mobile access to the internet. The iPhone was launched in 2007 and the first Android smartphone was launched in 2008. 2008 There are estimated literate to be 854 million illiterate adults worldwide. 12.6% illiterate 2012 Over 1 billion smartphones in the market. Placed end to end, this number of phones would wrap around the earth over 3 times! 2013 Tablet sales are expected to rise exponentially in the future! Tablet computers really took off in 2010 with the launch 300 250 of the iPad and Android tablets. 200 150 100 50 2016 2013 2012 Next 30 years More people will receive formal education than in all of human history so far and the use of mobile technology will play a large part in this.
