IF THIS WAS 1850 YOU'D BE A FARMER The History of Careers in America LET'S START AT THE BEGINNING. Well, after the cavemen career phase passed. GETTING BIBLICAL Careers most referenced in the bible: Get to Work! SCRIBE & SOLDIER c.1636 America's first college, aptly called "New College" is founded. Today we call it Harvard University. ALMOST 100 YEARS AFTER BECOMING AN INDEPENDENT NATION, most Americans were still toiling in the fields. The Civil War decides the c.1860 career of 5.5 million: soldier. REBUILDING THE NATION RAIL ALMOST 2 MILLION WORKED IN THE TRADE AND TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRIES IN 1870. ROAD CROSSING YOUR LAST NAME IS BAKER? HOPE YOU LIKE CAKE! BY 1880, ALL SORTS OF NEW INDUSTRIES HAD DEVELOPED. At the turn of the century, most Americans were still turning the plow. HOLLYWOOD Movie star wasn't a bad profession in the 1930's, now referred to as the "Golden Age of Hollywood." Judy Garland was paid $9,649 for her work on the Wizard of Oz. The average salary that year was $1,730. AVERAGE JOE JUDY GARLAND By 1940, 1 in 20 Americans held a bachelor's degree and many were leaving industries that required manual labor for more white-collar careers. SALUTE YOUR VETERANS The U.S. government did just that with the passing of the G.I. Bill, a program that offered free tuition to World War I| servicemen and women. By the middle of the decade, 2.2 million had used the G.I. Bill to attend college; an additional 6.6 million took advantage of a training program. WHERE MY GIRLS AT? More women than ever were entering the workforce in the 1960s. By the next decade, 38.1% of the workforce was female. Almost 40 years later and people still can't talk about the job market in the '70s. The decade was marked by low economic performance across most industrialized nations. Manufacturing industries were hit hard as inflation exploded to 6%. c.1970s LOL Put on your power suit and grab your mobile phone! In the 80s, more jobs than ever are based at a desk rather than a machine. By 1998, everyone who was anyone was online. Technical WORK IS GR8 careers dominate the market. After the dot-com bust, enrollments at universities across America increased 38%. But, power of the Internet didn't fall away. The top five fastest growing jobs from 2000 to 2009 were all computer-related, including software engineer, system engineer and administrator, and data analyst. WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE A... THAT COMMON QUESTION COMES WITH AN UNPREDICTABLE ANSWER IN 2010 AND BEYOND. What is clear is that new industries, rapid technology advancements and a global economy highlight the need for a skilled and educated workforce. By 2018, 63% of jobs will require some form of higher education and students will not just go to school to earn a degree, but to gain critical skills that will translate into a job and career.
