HISTORY OF THE BUSINESS SCHOOL 1819 1881 The Ecole Supérieure de Commerce of Paris (now ESCP Europe) was founded. Acknowledged to be the first business school in the world, today it has campuses in five European nations. The Wharton School of the Business schools were not a particularly glamorous academic choice when they were first developed, for the most part in the late 19th and early 20th century. Most were attempts to provide some formal education in accounting and commerce practices, for students who wished to find management careers in the industrial economy of the time. The first graduate program was introduced in 1900, but it would be another fifteen years before another one came along. University of Pennsylvania opens as the world's first collegiate business school. 1898 1898 The University of Chicago opens The College The College of Commerce at the University of California, of Commerce & Politics, the nation's second Berkeley, later renamed The Haas School of Business, was founded as the first business school at a public university. business school – later to become The Booth School of Business. The MBA is, for the most part, a post World War II phenomenon that really took flight in the 1960s and 1970s. But for the course of a century, there have been innovations in business education that continue today with programs such as "financial engineering" that have evolved quickly through the marriage of commerce and IT. 1900 The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College was founded as the first graduate school of management in the US, offering 1908 Harvard Graduate School of Business is founded, and with it the world's first MBA program. the "Master of Commercial Science". 1916 1916 Columbla School of Business opens New York University School of Accounts, Commerce & Finance 88 with both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, launching a PhD in Business in 1924. (later to become The Stern School of Business) expands to graduate programs in its "Wall Street Division," available full time and part time to working students. 1920 Harvard Graduate Business School, 1921 Wharton introduces its graduate MBA program. Also in that year Wharton founds The Industrial Research Unit, an initial attempt to connect academic research with business practices. 1922 University of Chicago introduces the first doctoral program in business. introduces the "case method" of business instruction, a model used in most business schools today. 1945 1946 1946 The Thunderbird School of Global Management (originally the American Institute for Foreign Trade), opens the first graduate management school for global business. University of Chicago Booth School of Business introduces the first Executive MBA program for experienced managers. Columbia Business School introduces its MBA program. 1957 INSEAD is founded near Paris, becoming the first European 1968 1994 Wharton School of Business introduces the study of managerial models, quantitative procedures, and computer-aided research with its new general management program. In 1969 the White Center for Financial Research opens its doors. Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business institution to offer an MBA program.
