Healthy Body, Healthy Mind - The Benefits of Physical Activity in School

HEALTHY BODY, HEALTHY MIND The Benefits of Physical Activity in School SCHOOL Physical activity is absolutely vital for kids. It not only develops healthy bones, joints, and muscles, fends off obesity and improves academic performance - it also offers opportunities to socialize & learn valuable new skills. SPARK explores the many benefits that physical activity brings to kids' personal and academic well-being. DID YOU KNOW? Obesity has more than doubled in children & tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for long-term cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Children who are obese are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, & poor self-esteem. HOW MUCH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DO CHILDREN NEED? 60 The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends that youth participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. The rate of academic learning per unit of class time is enhanced in physically active students. %24 Physically active students reflect reduced absenteeism in school, which translates into increased revenue for schools. For each additional school day per week that adolescents participated in physical education, the odds of being an overweight adult decreased by 5%. Increasing physical education instruction in kindergarten & Ist grade by just one hour per week could reduce the number of overweight youth by as much as 10% nationally. School administration support, effective physical education instructors, & focus on staff training have been identified as the factors most important for successful & sustainable PE implementation.
