DEPAKOTE Depakote Birth Defects Depakote Depakote (valproic acid/valproate) is used for the treatment of bipolar disorder, depression, and epilepsy. Prior to 2012, the U.S. Dept. of Justice alleged both civil and criminal complaints against the manufacturer claiming they promoted the drug for off label uses, among other issues. This drug has been linked to an increased risk of birth defects when taken during pregnancy. The FDA has issued several serious warnings about the possibility of birth defects including the following: Depakote and dtevens Johnson dyndrome Cleft Lip or Palate Low IQ This drug may also cause serious hypersensitivity reactions such as Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TENS). These conditions cause a painful purple rash as well as inflammation throughout the body.
