AMERICA'S SCHOOL DROPOUT EPIDEMIC BY THE NUMBERS Ш1 Only 7 in 10 ninth graders completed high school on time with a regular diploma. About 6 in 10 high school seniors go on to college the following year. WHY ARE STUDENTS DROPPING OUT? According to a survey of nearly 500 high school dropouts (by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation): 32% of dropouts said they left school to get a job and make money. 32% 22% 26% 22% of dropouts said they had to care for a family member. 26% of dropouts said they became a parent. NATIONAL TRENDS DROPOUT RATES BY REGION Dropout rates are highest in large cities for all regions of the country. They either re-enroll in high school and earn their diploma, or they earn a GED. 90% As adults, 4 out of 5 dropouts say that graduating from high school is important to success in life. Nearly 90% of 18-24-year-olds have a high school diploma, GED, or other equivalent credential.
