American Students Studying Abroad

AMERICAN STUDENTS STUDYING ABROAD Studying overseas has gradually increased in popularity over the past 10 years, as more institutions increase their support for students enrolling in subjects abroad. During the 2009/10 academic year, 270,604 U.S. students studied abroad for credit. This number was 4% more than the previous year, and almost double the number of students studying abroad from 2000/01. * WHO'S STUDYING ABROAD? * The most common profile of the student studying abroad is a white female in her junior year. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ACADEMIC LEVEL: Junior Year SOPHO MORES SENIOR RACE / ETHNICITY: 35.8% 21.8% 13.2% White The majority of students who study abroad choose to do so in their junior year. GENDER: Female CANADA PASSPORT NDIA 4.7% 78.7% 6.4% 7.9% Black/ White Hispanic / Latino Asian / African- Pacific American Islander 63.5% of students who study abroad are female, and 36.5% of students are male. TOP DESTINATIONS Key: Europe is the leading host region for American students studying abroad, with 53.5% choosing it as their destination.
