The 5 Pillars of Reading Instruction

THE 5 PILLARS OF READING INSTRUCTION PHONEMIC AWARENESS 1. - One of THE BEST predictors of reading success! (More so than intelligence!). But most schools fail to teach it this crucial reading skill. Phonemes are the smallest units of sound that can differentiate meaning. In other words, they are the building blocks of speech. PHONEMIC AWARENESS is the ability to hear, identify and work with phonemes. Activities You Can Do With Your Child to Improve Your Child's Phonemic Awareness Talking ARE. . You can play rhyming and word games with your child any time. In the car, at the store, on the swings - anywhere! Here are some ideas to get you started: WHAT IS THE FIRST SOUND IN BEAR? WHAT IS THE LAST SOUND IN BEAR? HOW MANY WORDS RHYME WITH BEAR? WHAT WORDS RHYME WITH BEAR? Practice substitution while rocking out to your favorite tunes. Let's sing "Skip to my Lou" - but instead of making the "L" sound, let's make the "T" sound! Let's sing "Old McDonald," but let's make every word start with a "ch-" sound! READING ! Here are some great books that teach kids to manipulate sounds - can you think of any more? Some Smug Slug LORA LILLYS PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE A Linle Bock PHONICS - TURNING SOUNDS INTO LETTERS Phonics is the crucial link between what kids hear and LI difficult part for kids to master. how they read and write... but it's also the most IN OTHER WORDS, WRITTEN WORDS ARE A CODE.. AND PHONICS TEACHES KIDS HOW TO DECODE THEM. The National Reading Panel has found that systematic, explicit phonics instruction benefits kids of all ages, social classes and abilities... and that EARLIER IS BETTER. PHONICS instruction is most effective when it begins by kindergarten. 3. FLUENCY – THE ABILITY TO READ ACCURATELY, QUICKLY AND EXPRESSIVELY. CNICHD, 2000) When kids have to focus on what each word means, they can't focus on what the story eans. This makes reading a lot less fun! FLUENCY IS IMPORTANT TO A CHILD'S LEARNING & MOTIVATION. SO HOW'S YOUR CHILD'S FLUENCY? FIND OUT WITH THE: Read mostly in larger, more meaning- LEVEL ful phrase groups. They may make some mistakes, but they don't detract from the overall story structure. Some of most of the story is read with expressive interpretation. NAEP Fluency Scale - Does your child... 3 LEVEL Read mostly in three- or four-word phrases. Most of the phrasing seems appropriate and preserves the original syntax. LEVEL Read mostly in two-word phrases, with some three- or four-word phrases. Some word-by-word reading may be present. LEVEL Read mostly word-by-word, with some two- or three-word phrases. They do not always preserve meaningful syntax. You can improve your child's fluency through explicit instruction (like the kind offered through StudyDog). You can also practice through Guided Öral Reading: 1. Read the text to your child. 2. Have your child reread the text silently, on their own. Let them do it more than once, if necessary. 3. Now ask them to read the passage aloud. Have them repeat up to four times. 4. VOCABULARY –BECAUSE KIDS CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY'RE READING WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT MOST OF THE WORDS MEAN. A strong vocabulary helps kids: think more deeply; express themselves; learn more quickly; and read at or above grade level. THE GOOD NEWS IS... KIDS ARE BORN TO LEARN NEW WORDS! HOW CAN YOU HELP DEVELOP YOUR CHILD'S VOCABULARY? 1. TALKI As much as you can. About any- thing! Studies show that quantity matters as much as quality. There is a direct link between how many words are spoken at home and how well your child does in 3rd grade. AT 18 MONTHS OLD, MOST KIDS KNOW - 50 WORDS TRY THIS: A. Narrate what you're doing B. Talk to yourself C. Read out loud BY THE TIME THEY'RE 6, THEY KNOW -2600 WORDS D. Sing E. Download educational podcasts or reading games for your child to play at home or in the car THEIR VOCABULARY INCREASES BY 10-20 NEW WORDS PER WEEK! 2. Use new words in familiar contexts. Kids retain new words best when they deduce the meaning on their own. Again, it's what they were born to do! 3. Practice phonemic awareness. Kids can figure out what new words better when they can hear and recognize sounds they already know. 5. COMPREHENSION - . PUTTING ALL THE PIECES TOGETHER EVEN THOUGH COMPREHENSION IS THE FINAL STEP TO BECOMINGA GREAT READER, YOU CAN START TEACHING YOUR CHILD BEFORE THEY CAN READ. How can you develop your child's comprehension? Ask them questions! Focus on: PREDICTION "What do you think will happen SUMMARIZATION "Can you summarize what has already happened?" ANALYSIS "Why do you think he did that?" RELATION you of anything in your life?" "Does that remind next?"
